Ilya Tskhurbaev, born in 1999 in Moscow, graduated from the Surikov Moscow State Academic Art Institute. He works with traditional painting techniques, focusing on the national theme of his parents’ homeland, the republic of North Ossetia–Alania, in the Caucasus region.
Ilya strives to depict this multifaceted region and the history of his ancestors without resorting to clichés and stereotypes, developing his own artistic style.
Ilya often spent his summer months in North Ossetia–Alania, breathing in the mountain air and absorbing the national characteristics. Through his canvases, we can feel the romantic sensation of summer vacations, which the artist conveys as a nostalgic memory, a feeling that never becomes tiresome. The Caucasus, as a cultural phenomenon, is revealed in his works through the everyday life of real people, making his art even more interesting and attractive. The ethnic motifs and national identity in his work are an important contribution to preserving the cultural heritage of the region.
The figures in his paintings are often hidden by geometric structures, symbolizing the loss of personal identity in the face of societal expectations and structures. However, they are not disconnected from the landscape. The use of earth tones and a muted color palette adds to the somber and reflective mood of his pieces, emphasizing themes of disillusionment and existential angst.
